Humanitarian Emergency Response Review

28 March 2011 — By Paddy Ashdown

This independent review into how the UK (through DFID) responds to humanitarian emergencies, considers how the UK should best respond to overseas emergencies and the role the UK should play in the international humanitarian system. It looks at the potential future humanitarian challenges and the capacities there are to cope with these. One of the findings of the review looks at innovative ways of tackling the complex challenges being faced by the humanitarian community, of which cash-based approaches is one. The review admits the widely acknowledged benefits of cash and encourages DFID to make cash-based responses the usual relief and recovery position for its partners, rather than the exception.
