Social Protection, CVA and Climate Change

The disruptive impacts of the climate and environment crisis are set to grow, bringing significant systemic, economic, social, and political changes. Recent analysis estimates that a 1°C temperature increase could result in up to a 12% decline in global GDP and a 31% welfare loss, which is comparable to a major war being fought domestically, forever.

Social protection can be critical in addressing vulnerabilities associated with climate change and supporting structural changes for a green transition. In these webinars, Anna McCord and/or Sayanti Sengupta will first walk you through key facts and concepts regarding social protection and the climate crisis, to understand the basics, following which Sayanti and Matthew Walsham provide some country and programme examples to help inspire your thinking. The great examples and reflections remind us that even while we might have to operate within our institutional mandates, there are existing entry points for us to work together to face these challenges!

Option 1 (Americas-friendly – July 18th): Elisa Savelli from Mercy Corps and Annalisa Staffa, Director of  Socioeconomic Analysis with the Government of the Dominican Republic, join Anna, Sayanti and Matthew to discuss the need for collaboration, flexibility, adaptation and resourcing to have  government-led social protection systems, which are ready to address the needs and compounding vulnerabilities arising from the climate crisis in the short, medium and long term. 

Option 2 (Asia-friendly – July 23rd): Jana Bischler from International Labour Organization, Inge Stokkel from Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Batbayar Sainzaya from World Vision, join Sayanti and Matthew. They push us to work together for better and more holistic responses, focusing on systems, inclusivity and building long term strategies through partnerships.
