John has been Oxfam GB’s International Programme Director since the beginning of 2019. His experience of humanitarian action dates back to the early 1990s when working in northern Iraq. Subsequently he has worked across many parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe either based in country, in the headquarters of international civil society organisations or through consultancy. Core interests include putting people at the centre of international development and humanitarian action including through promoting effective downward accountability and championing locally led humanitarian action. Whilst rooted in the work of civil society he looks to promote synergies with government and the private sector in humanitarian action. For several years John was a Board member for Sphere.
