Post-COP 29 in Baku: Successes, challenges and next steps – Asia friendly time
COP 29 in Baku is concluded on November 22nd, 2024. COP is the most important climate decision-making forum, whose agreements and commitments can have potentially huge impacts for the people most affected by climate change. However, for the many humanitarian stakeholders who don’t directly work in the climate space, it can be difficult to find the time or opportunity to understand, which decisions are most relevant, and the implications these can have for crisis affected communities and humanitarian response.
If this sounds like you, the Disasters Emergency Committee, Climate Charter and the CALP CVA, Climate and Environment CoP invite you to join our joint webinar, where we’ll explore what have been the main successes and challenges of the COP 29 for humanitarians. We’ll also be discussing how to better prepare for and engage with COP30 in Brazil in 2025.
On the agenda
During this session, the panelists will highlight what they regard as the key successes and remaining challenges after Baku COP 29, with a focus on what this means for the humanitarian sector, including in relation to relevant Climate Charter commitments. This year’s COP has been referred to as the ‘finance COP’, focusing on negotiating the New Collective Quantified Goals (NCQG), to replace the current goal of a collective $100 billion per year of climate finance provided and/or mobilized by developed countries to developing nations.
Panelists will also discuss preparations for the next COP (COP30 will be in Brazil and is set to focus on indigenous populations and agroindustry). A framing question for this will be how can humanitarian and development practitioners aiming to help address and mitigate needs arising from the climate crisis best prepare for COP30, including considering the outcomes of COP29 and the challenging global context? You will also have opportunities to ask the panel questions.
