CVA – The Fundamentals

This one-day course targets any staff who are new to CVA, and is designed as an introduction to key concepts, definitions and myths relating to cash and voucher assistance in humanitarian settings. This course is ideal for people who wish to understand the basics of CVA, or who need to be able to explain some key concepts or defend the use of CVA to donors, partners or the public, or who want to understand the terminology related to CVA. It will also serve as an entry point for practitioners who will engage in broader capacity building activities with CaLP.

Objectives

By the end of each session, participants will be able to:
Session 2: CVA Concepts, Contexts and Preconditions
Session 3: Principles, Evidence Base and Advocacy for CVA
▪ State the guiding principles and cross-cutting considerations for CVA
▪ Explain the main benefits of CVA, using the evidence base
▪ Cite key trends and recent developments in CVA
▪ List key risks relating to CVA and describe suggested mitigations
▪ Present a case for using CVA in an emergency context
Session 4: CVA and the Project Cycle
▪ Describe the key stages of the CVA process within the project cycle
▪ Identify the different staff functions involved in CVA and explain the value these functions bring
▪ Explain the need for segregation of duties for compliance
Session 1: Introduction to CVA
▪ Reflect on attitudes and experiences of cash and voucher assistance
▪ Define what cash and voucher assistance is
▪ Describe the rationale for delivering cash and voucher assistance in the humanitarian context
▪ Describe core CVA modalities and definitions
▪ Explain how cash and voucher assistance (CVA) can support the different phases of humanitarian
response, including preparedness and contingency, response and recovery
▪ Identify the preconditions and key criteria to determine whether CVA is feasible
