14:00

Objectives

Webinar: 16 April 2020, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM CEST

Organiser:

As the coronavirus pandemic reaches new corners of the globe, its impacts are beginning to cascade on already stretched aid operations in crisis zones. According to the “living paper” of the World Bank on tracking social protection measures taken by governments, as of March 27, 2020, a total of 84 countries have introduced or adapted social protection and jobs programs in response to COVID-19. This is an 87% increase since last week (when countries were just 45), with a total of 283 programs currently in place. Among classes of interventions, social assistance (non-contributory transfers) is the most widely used (including a total of 150 programs), followed by actions in social insurance (91) and supply- side labour market interventions (42). Within social assistance, cash transfer programs are clearly the most widely used intervention by governments (over one-third of total programs, and 65% of social assistance schemes.  This webinar will use the research from the World Bank as a starting point and explore entry points and lessons from past experiences on how humanitarian actors can be supporting communities in need by linking/supporting social protection systems and humanitarian cash.

Panellists:

  • Nathalie Klein, the CALP Network West & Central Africa Regional Representative
  • Gabriel Fernandez, Social Protection Specialist

Moderator:

Zehra Rizvi, Independent Consultant in Social Protection and Cash.

This webinar is part of the Grand Bargain sub group on linking social protection and humanitarian cash series being co-hosted with the Cash Learning Partnership.
