Cash events at the HNPW – top picks
There is a record number of cash-related events at this year’s HNPW with nine topics on the agenda ranging from blockchain to markets to inclusion of people with disabilities.

19 May: Disability inclusion in humanitarian cash assistance
This will cover a critical topic that should be top of the agenda for cash practitioners. How can we ensure cash transfers are inclusive of people with disabilities by ensuring transfer values address their specific (and usually more costly) needs? This event is organised by CALP member, CBM Global Disability Inclusion.
This event will have simultaneous Spanish translation.
19 May: Cash coordination and locally led response
This session will bring together national organizations to discuss the opportunity and challenges of ensuring local leadership in cash coordination. This discussion is particularly timely in light of the long-awaited IASC endorsement of cash coordination structures. This event is organised by CALP’s CVA and Locally Led Responses group and will have simultaneous interpretation in Arabic, French and Spanish.
17 May: Where are we now? Linking humanitarian cash and national social protection
This session brings together the top experts on the linkages between humanitarian cash and social protection to discuss trends resulting from the pandemic, which catalyzed a rapid expansion of social protection systems around the world, as well as opportunities to unlock key barriers. This is a CALP-organised event, with participation from UNICEF, the World Bank and SPACE.

2 May: Blockchain for good
This session looks like a good primer for newbies to this issue. However, it’s doubtful that 30 minutes will enable discussion of the bigger questions around blockchain’s carbon footprint and data privacy.
11 May: The DigCBA Project: Responsible Use of Digital Cash based Assistance
During this session we’ll learn about the project’s experience to date in digitizing assistance from assessment to delivery to communicating with recipients – all with data responsibility in mind. The discussion is based on the experiences of CALP members, including the Norwegian Refugee Council and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

10 May: Cash and/or carry: The challenges and modalities of delivering aid in conflict zones
This session will showcase the numerous challenges of operating in complex emergencies like Syria. The event will cover the challenges of managing inflation, working through informal financial service providers and the important role of local actors. The event is organised by the Hanken School of Economics.

3 May: Cross-crisis analysis of price trends and market functionality during the COVID-19 pandemic
This session will examine trends in market monitoring identified in eight crisis contexts during the pandemic. This is a CALP member event, IMPACT Initiatives.
10 May: Local Actors, local Markets: Conflict Sensitive Market Analysis
This session will examine how to undertake a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding markets in fragile settings, with experiences drawn from Afghanistan, Colombia and Myanmar. This event is organized by CALP members World Vision and Swiss Development Corporation.
4 May: Market Based Approaches to Energy Access in Humanitarian Contexts
This session will explore how aid actors can ‘green’ the response by ensuring access to clean energy by leveraging the private sector and innovative financing. This event is run by CALP members Mercy Corps and the International Organization for Migration.
